The History of King of Spices in Ceylon leads back over ***0 years,
even to early Anuradhapura and Polonnaru era. Even there were
records indicating the pepper cultivation before the *6th century,
it was then which Europeans were lead to invade Sri Lanka in search
of this Black Gold. With the British population of the country in
*9thcentury, Sri Lankan Pepper was traded with a huge demand in the
international market.
Pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae.
Black and white peppercorns are both the fruit of the pepper plant,
but they are processed differently. Black peppercorns are picked
when almost
ripe and sun-dried, turning the outer layer black. White
pepper is prepared by having the outer layer removed before drying,
leaving only the inner seed. Peppercorns are widely believed to the
most commonly used culinary spice in the world. It has been used
throughout history in herbal medicine and to preserve food.
Pepper is developed over a zone of *7,**0 ha of Sri Lanka and
Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, Matale, and Kandy, are accounted
as significant areas of development.
